The New Front Door to the Future

More Than Just Books: Why Your Local Library is Becoming the World’s Most Advanced AI Lab

By: The Alphabet Team

At Alphabet, our mission has always been to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible.
But in 2026, information alone is no longer enough. To thrive in a digital economy, you need the tools to process, synthesize, and create with that information.
You need to compute.
That is why we are thrilled to announce that all 73 branches of the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) are now home to Gemini Labs—our most ambitious effort to date to turn the “compute divide” into a “compute bridge.”

A New Neighborhood Resource

Walking into a Gemini Lab, you won’t see cold, sterile machines. You’ll see the heartbeat of Los Angeles.

The Explorer
In the Pacoima branch, 11-year-old Leo, a student from the “Gen Alpha” generation, uses enterprise-grade Gemini models to learn the basics of robotics programming. For Leo, the library is no longer just a place for homework; it’s a garage where his first inventions come to life.

The Student
Across town, Maya, a first-generation college student, is using the labs to run complex data simulations for her senior thesis—tools that would otherwise be locked behind a subscription paywall she cannot afford.

The Entrepreneur
At the East LA branch, Carlos, a local restaurant owner, uses our real-time translation and marketing tools to revamp his menu and reach a wider audience, breaking through language barriers that once limited his business.

The Innovator
In a quiet corner, Sarah is fine-tuning a nonprofit app designed to track local heat islands, utilizing our sandbox environment to test her code before launching it to the world.

Governance by Design

We know that with great power comes the need for great responsibility. These labs are built on a foundation of trust. Following the commitment made by our CEO, we guarantee that no user data or queries from these community labs will be used to train our foundational models without explicit, opt-in consent. This is an “S” (Social) initiative designed for people, not for data collection.

Join the Movement

The future of AI shouldn’t be a luxury.
It should be a public utility, available to the dreamer, the student, and the small business owner alike. Whether you are a “Leo” just starting your journey or a “Carlos” looking to grow your legacy, your seat is waiting. Visit your nearest LAPL branch today and see what you can build.
